The Bulls are the most popular choice among Hoops Rumors readers who voted in a poll to identify the team not named the Cavaliers that had the most success this offseason, but reader Brent Nault believes Toronto GM Masai Ujiri and his staff deserve plaudits, too.

  • How about the Raptors? They were able to re-sign their key free agents in Kyle Lowry, Greivis Vasquez, and Patrick Patterson to fairly reasonable deals. Then they went out and turned John Salmons into a much-needed offensive weapon off the bench in Lou Williams, signed the wing defender they so desperately needed in James Johnson and signed a true backup center in Greg Stiemsma. They managed to keep their playoff team from last year together while filling the few holes they had on their roster, all while maintaining substantial cap flexibility for a Kevin Durant run in 2016.

Greg Monroe recently became the most high-profile player to sign a qualifying offer since rookie scale contracts came into existence, and Matt Buys gives his take on what it means for the Pistons:

  • As a Pistons fan, this feels like a decent outcome for the team. Ideally, we would have been able to get some assets for him in a sign-and-trade. The worst-case scenario would have been giving him something like $14 or $15MM a year for the next four or five years. Smart teams can find equal production — and more flexibility — from players who are far cheaper. Monroe is clearly the kind of “good, but not great” player that dumb teams waste mid-level money on because they’re scared of losing them for nothing. Thankfully, Monroe’s persistence to get out of Detroit didn’t allow the Pistons to make that mistake.

The Spurs have preserved their mid-level and biannual exceptions this summer, giving them ammunition in their pursuit of Ray Allen, as rxbrgr points out.

  • One advantage the Spurs have compared to about any other club competing for Allen’s services is they still have BOTH their exceptions left — that means they can offer a LOT more than the minimum if they would so choose. So, if Allen wants to prioritize money AND winning, then maybe the Spurs are his best choice.

Jimmy Butler is up for a rookie-scale extension, as we examined, and reader Golie-Lorenzo Green thinks it’s time for the Bulls to open their wallets.

  • The only reason his shooting percentage dropped is because he was being asked to do so much on defense and then was getting double-teamed on offense because there weren’t any other threats in the backcourt. With Derrick Rose returning, the addition of Doug McDermott, Pau Gasol and Tony Snell stepping it up, I think Butler will do good things offensively. The Bulls should get a contract in place now because if he improves on offense even a little bit they may lose him to free agency when that time comes. Butler is by far a top-five defender of wings in a league full of talented scorers at that position. The Bulls need him more than most realize.

Many Hoops Rumors readers are supportive of Sixers GM Sam Hinkie‘s radical rebuilding project, and count Michael Nguyen among them.

  • As a Sixer fan I have embraced the tank and still go to games because the seats are so cheap! If the plan works, the Sixers will dominate for at least a decade. If the plan fails they still get high draft picks. The current ownership group did try to win. They went all in and spent money on players and made trades for Andrew Bynum but things just didn’t work out one way or another. But I thoroughly am enjoying Hinkie’s plan.

The Cavs seem to have been scouring the market for centers of late, and Al-Zamar McKinney suggests a veteran who could also offer some rebounding.

  • I don’t know what the Cavs are waiting for, they need to hurry up and get Greg Stiemsma. He’s the best healthy all-around big man still on the market. He has great touch around the basket, he rebounds well enough to be a solid backup, and he knows how to protect to the rim.

One of the most compelling stories of late in the NBA involves Becky Hammon, who will become just the second woman ever to serve as an assistant coach for regular season NBA games when she does so on the Spurs bench this year. Reader TRAPstar hopes for a day when such news is routine:

  • Interesting and good for her. However, we make too big a deal of these “groundbreaking achievements” by race and gender. I hope that it opens up a path for all of the smartest minds in basketball (i.e. Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird) to pass their knowledge along as coaches, regardless of gender.

Shawn Marion seems more likely to sign with the Cavs than anyone else, including the Pacers, who’ve also been in pursuit. Still, Kevin Alberda believes that there’s pressure on Indiana to change that.

  • Yeah, they need Marion really badly. Can’t possibly run out a SF depth chart of [Chris] Copeland and Solomon Hill and expect to win. Just can’t do it. Assuming Monroe is back, I don’t see any way the Pacers are realistically better than the Pistons. Should be a fight for that eighth seed between those two and maybe the Knicks.

The Cavs reportedly offered a first-round pick to the Nuggets for Timofey Mozgov, and while Cleveland would have to add salary to its proposal make a trade possible, LBCknickerbocker3 thinks Denver will be reluctant to give up the 7’1″ center.

  • Mozgov has been steadily improving over the years and has made himself a pretty good player. He would be a nice fit for Cleveland. I don’t see the Nuggets giving him up for a first-rounder though. Timmy is a favorite of Brian Shaw‘s and I know the Nuggets are looking to bounce back this year, which they can do with everyone healthy.

Rumors connecting Kevin Love to the Cavs are mounting, but reader Manchershaw Engineer thinks the pressure is on the Cavs, and not the Wolves, to swing a trade that delivers Love to Cleveland before he becomes a free agent next summer.

  • No, this is the great myth this rumor is trying to create. If Minnesota doesn’t trade him to Cleveland, he can’t go to Cleveland THIS YEAR OR NEXT. He can’t go there as a free agent without taking a ridiculous pay cut. Based on that alone, any team that thinks they are a good situation for Love should trade for him. Because if you trade for him, not only do you have his Bird rights, you’ve also eliminated any possibility of him winding up in Cleveland. Sure, he *could* walk at the end of the year, but the teams involved (Chicago, Golden State) are a lot better options to sign with than the teams that are going to have cap room after this season. There’s almost no chance he doesn’t re-sign if one of those teams trades for him.

The Sixers oppose changes to the draft lottery that would make it tougher for the worst teams in the league to net the No. 1 overall pick as soon as the 2015 draft, and while buffalonichols is a critic of the lottery, he thinks the league shouldn’t be in such a hurry.

  • No matter how you feel about the NBA draft lottery, and I think it’s terrible, I think the Sixers have a point here. You can’t have rules set in place and then change them suddenly in midstream. If the NBA is going to change the way the lottery works, they should phase it in so teams building their core under the current system don’t get screwed. Announce the changes now and then implement them in two or three years so teams can change their strategies going forward. Or, you know, just eliminate the lottery altogether in a few years.

I took a stab at forecasting the market for rookie scale extensions, listing Tobias Harris among those unlikely to sign one. Cigamodnalro followed with several well-considered dissenting opinions. Here’s his take on Harris:

  • Orlando has a logjam at small forward, it is true, but I think Harris is already a vocal leader of the team, and that this will only be magnified in the absence of vets like Jameer Nelson. Milestones like making the [USA Basketball] Select Team obviously only serve to increase his value to the team and possibly around the league. [Maurice] Harkless is significantly more likely to be the one moving on, I would think.

The biggest story of the NBA offseason, or of any of the past four NBA offseasons, was the homecoming of LeBron James to the Cavaliers, a move the four-time MVP announced a week ago. It was a triumphant moment for Cleveland fans, including Hoops Rumors reader The Crippler:

  • If you’re not passionate as a sports fan … then maybe you shouldn’t watch sports. At the end of the day, we are all human and we make mistakes. The bigger picture is can you forgive that person and mend that relationship? LeBron and [Cavs owner Dan] Gilbert did it and the TRUE CAVS fans did it. Everything else is irrelevant!!!! #CavsNation #AllForOne #WelcomeHomeBron.

Trock broke down the on-court implications of the move, and presaged Cleveland’s deal with Mike Miller:

  • I dont think we will see an issue with floor space. Run the ball through [Kyrie] Irving like a team should (through the PG) with LeBron being on the floor; it will open up space for Irving. Once they realize that they need to guard him better and they can’t double up on LeBron anymore, it will definitely open it up for him. [Andrew] Wiggins should translate well to the NBA. But I think you are right — if [Kevin] Love comes to Cleveland … Boy that would be a nasty line up. I also see Ray Allen and Mike Miller coming over as great role players for this team (although I am not sure of Cleveland’s cap space and if they can make all that happen).

Free agents aren’t the only ones changing teams this year. Carlos Boozer wound up with the Lakers after the Bulls waived him using the amnesty clause, and the end of his tenure in Chicago couldn’t have come soon enough for Justin Allen:

  • I’m happy to see Boozer gone. I’ve never been as hard on him as other people, but it just seemed at times that he could only score from one spot on the floor. Plus his defense is next to nothing, and you can’t rely on him late in games. Ya, [last season he averaged] 13 points per game, but he’s not a player you can rely on when you’re trying to win a championship.

The Knicks are willing to reconsider their stance against absorbing Carlos Boozer in a sign-and-trade from the Bulls involving Carmelo Anthony, perhaps following the same logic that reader Resneps2340 laid out.

  • The Knicks shouldn’t dismiss such a trade right off the bat. Yes, Boozer is not worth $16.8MM if the only other thing you are including is picks. The Bulls aren’t trading Taj [Gibson] either since he was in the Carmelo meeting today and I’m sure him being on the team was part of the sales pitch. If the Knicks took Boozer, I think the Bulls would be willing to give up a couple of picks, the rights to Nikola Mirotic (one of the best young players in Europe who is likely to come over this year), and as much as I hate to say it, Jimmy Butler. I think the Bulls are beyond desperate to get ‘Melo and frankly, the Knicks may not be able to do better that that in a sign-and-trade.

Reaction was swiftly negative when the Magic struck a two-year, $9MM deal with Ben Gordon, and jeremy summed up just why he thinks Orlando will regret the agreement.

  • It doesn’t matter how much cap room you have; a bad deal can still be a bad deal. This dude hasn’t been the same player since he left the Bulls. His stat line is nothing that makes him worth $9MM. He’s still a decent player, but I’m not sure he’s worth $9MM.

Eddie Scarito of Hoops Rumors only handed out one A in our Northwest Division Draft Grades, but it seems like Sky14 might have given out more.

  • I really like what some of the teams in this division did on draft day, especially the Jazz and the Nuggets. The Wolves draft is hard to gauge because it seems like it has an equal chance of being very good or producing absolutely nothing. Based on his first two drafts, Flip Saunders clearly favors upside.

The announcement of this year’s All-NBA teams sparked a strong debate in our comments. Several readers gave strong feedback, including Aaron Pi, who touched on Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love, perhaps the two most available superstars.

  • For everyone who says ‘Melo deserved [an All-NBA nod], he didn’t. I like Melo a lot, and think he is a good player, but he didn’t make it to the playoffs in the East. He team only won 37 games, in the East again! Someone like that does not deserve to be on this list. (I do say the same thing about Kevin Love. There should be more complaints about him being so high on this list.)

The Bulls have their eyes on both Anthony and Love, and in response to a dispatch suggesting a path to the Wolves star, Vegandork thinks Chicago should favor a star-heavy approach.

  • The Bulls certainly aren’t winning with their current pieces, so why not try the three superstar/minimum-salary role player route. It works for Miami, and one would argue the Bulls trio would be better.

Some in the Pacers front office reportedly questioned the wisdom of re-signing Lance Stephenson, but dogmanx23 seems to agree with Pacers president Larry Bird, who’s trying to bring the shooting guard back.

  • They need Lance. He does a little bit of everything and finding players like that isn’t easy. Yeah I don’t pay him over $10MM, but I would offer somewhere around $6-$7MM a year. Chances are a team out there will go into the $10MM range and his time in Indy is over. Pacers need a point guard and should maybe try and use Lance to get one if they don’t plan to keep him. George Hill can be moved to shooting guard if they need him to.

Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio stopped by the comments section to give feedback on our Offseason Outlook for the Hawks, and we’ve had plenty of response to the stories shaping what promises to be a wild NBA summer. The latest Hoops Rumors Mock Draft from our Alex Lee sparked plenty of debate, and reader Scott shared his thoughts on what the Sixers, drafting third and 10th, should do.

  • Jabari Parker and Doug McDermott are not very athletic, which is something I think Philly values. I could see them taking Dante Exum at No. 3 if Parker is one of the big three who falls. I also see them looking to pick Gary Harris instead of McDermott at No. 10 if they do take Parker. Harris is small for a shooting guard, but Michael Carter-Williams makes up for it with his size. Also, I like James Young as another option. To me, they need a go-to scorer eventually and I don’t see them getting it in free agency. I think Parker at No. 3 or Young at No. 10 might be their best options. It’ll be curious if they dangle Thaddeus Young to L.A. or Sacramento if a player they like falls.

As David Griffin gets to work as Cleveland’s GM for the long haul, Keith B McGlothin wonders why Griffin doesn’t get more of the blame for the team’s inability to make the playoffs the last four seasons.

  • David Griffin has been in the building since LeBron James left Cleveland. He has been the VP of Basketball Operations (2010), so why aren’t the failures of the organization he spoke of not HIS FAILURES as well?

I pointed to the inherent value of David Lee‘s high-caliber offensive production amid a report suggesting the Magic have interest in the Warriors power forward, but jeffdg isn’t in Lee’s corner:

  • He is a negative value asset, and GSW would have to give up something to move him, or take back another undesirable contract. Sure, he is a solid offensive player, but he is much better suited as a third big  — a scoring big off the bench — at about 40% of his current salary. I can’t see anyone giving up anything of value to acquire him.

The Mavs have their eyes on a couple of Knicks, but reader William McGowan would prefer to see Dallas acquire the less splashy of the two, choosing Tyson Chandler over Carmelo Anthony.

  • I do not want Carmelo on this team. But if we could get Chandler back, that would make me happy again. We never should have let him go. I would love to see Luol Deng as a Maverick. He would be an upgrade over [Shawn] Marion. But I would love to see Marion back as well. We would be set at small forward. We can’t continue to have two guards that can’t defend well. One of them has to go. Though I like [Jose] Calderon, I do believe we should use him as a trade piece. Dallas has a lot of work to do to build a team for the 2014-2015 season. I am excited to see what we do.

News of mutual interest between the Lakers and Chris Bosh sparked a lively discussion with a range of opinions, but John Moore captured the general tenor of the reaction from Lakers fans.

  •  No, no, no! Trading Pau [Gasol] for another kind of Pau is the way I see it. If the Lakers get tied up in another big salary for an aging but still functional player it’s not what I see as a solution.
A point guard that plays D would be a true asset, but there are no instant cures out there (that I see).

The Warriors made a move that had grown increasingly likely in the past several weeks, firing coach Mark Jackson despite a 51-win regular season that was the team’s best in 22 years. Jackson didn’t get along with Warriors management, and Randolph_Knackstedt sees it as an unjust dismissal that nonetheless presents an opportunity for the ousted coach.

  • Three years as the warriors coach. Each season the warriors have increased scoring and decreased opponents scoring while making it to the playoffs two years in a row. But the Warriors front office doesn’t care because they couldn’t control Jackson like they wanted to. At least Jackson can now coach for an organization that actually appreciates him.

This week’s report that the Bulls are likely to attempt to trade Carlos Boozer inspired a robust discussion on Hoops Rumors, and reader John Conley had much to say about a Bulls franchise he feels has underperformed. We’ll share his thoughts on what Chicago must do in the summer ahead.

  • The Bulls need three scoring threats in order for them to get to the conference finals. They can’t make wide open shots during crunch time. If [Derrick] Rose comes back healthy, they need at least two guys to go with him that score at least 15 points per game and play some form of defense. They keep repackaging the same team and it isn’t working. Their bench is weak, the starting five is weak and their offense is weak. Can’t fall in love with players the way the Bulls have in recent years. We need a couple of beasts on offense. We need a Nene. Gotta be one D-Leaguer that is a beast and hungry for a chance?

Pau Gasol isn’t content with his team either, writing on his website that the Lakers would have to make significant changes for him to re-sign this summer. One of the teams likely to pursue him is Charlotte, and ozzie chimed in about whether the Bobcats, soon to be renamed the Hornets, would be a fit.

  • I would say, “If Gasol could help the new Hornets in some ways, go for it.” He could be one of the missing links needed to make the Hornets a much more improved team next season. The Lakers are at a standstill with no improvement insight. The Hornets move would make more sense.

The Lakers might be anxious to make a splash with their coaching hire, but so should the Timberwolves, as Dorian Holden wrote in response to news on candidates for the Minnesota job.

  • The Wolves have gotta hit a home run knowing that [Kevin] Love is entering his walk year. They need a big name splash. And I think some of these people are gonna wait for the Lakers to open up.
